GIRLFRIENDS GET-TOGETHER SPOTLIGHTS...

This month’s GGT spotlight is on Elle Denise, Chief Visionary Officer of Elle Sharp PR & Planning. I first met her on MySpace! Who knew! And she isn’t even crazy! LOL. Chile, you know how people change when they're online; they have different personas. Elle is down-to-earth and a great lady. She, along with SavvySocialite, collaborated with Girlfriends Get-Together on the first Washington D.C. Girlfriends Get-Together event. It was a blast! Since then we have kept in touch with the rising-star girlfriend.

Her company:
Elle Sharp PR & Planning

What she offers:
Public Relations, Event Planning, Marketing, Desktop Publishing, Virtual Assistant/Administrative tasks, and she even sells The Body Shop @ Home products.

We asked the DC/MD/NOVA based Chica a few questions, and here is what she had to say…

GGT: Are you living your dreams?
Elle:
As each day passes, I find that I’m getting closer to achieving my dreams: success and happiness. Event Planning is FUN to me. It’s my passion.

GGT: Are your career goals in line with your personal goals?
Elle:
Yes. They go hand-in-hand. If my personal goals are in tact, then my career goals will follow (and vice versa).

GGT: Has there been an event or person that has greatly influenced you to be the person you are today?
Elle: Various people (friends, family, clients and guests) and events have encouraged me to remain focused. It’s always nice to be an inspiration to someone. That gives me more inspiration. Overall, I enjoy working with children. They’re grateful, determined, honest and aware of the smallest details.

GGT:What advice can you give to other rising-star girlfriends?
Elle:

o Take your own advice. Don’t second-guess yourself.
o Get a mentor (or 2).
o Pursue YOUR dreams.
o Less is more.
o Take a chance.
o Think outside the box. Be original! Do the opposite of what everyone else is doing.
o Surround yourself with positive and like-minded people.
o Ignore “naysayers”: Optimism, IN! Pessimism, OUT!
o Network! Network! Network! Seek lasting connections.

GGT: Name some good books you’ve read.
Elle:

Business
o The Martha Rules: 10 Essentials for Achieving Success As You Start, Build, or Manage a Business ~ Martha Stewart
o How to Start a Home-Based Event Planning Business ~ Jill S. Morgan

Leisure
o The Five People You Meet in Heaven~Mitch Albom

Cookie Swap!

The holidays are in full swing! Are you looking for a fun way to celebrate during this time of year?

Have a good ‘ole impromptu throw down cookie swap. Cookie swaps are fun, yummy, and a sure winner for a holiday gathering. Most people make up their own rules for cookie swaps, but here is a guideline you might like to follow:

If you are organizing the cookie swap, you will probably end up as the host for this event. Make sure that you have a table big enough to hold the plates of cookies that your guests will be bringing. Most of the guests may be planning on taking the cookies home, so you'll want to serve some refreshments. You can serve something light to nibble on such as cheese and crackers or hummus and pita.

Send out an evite (www.evite.com) or make calls to let people know when and where the cookie swap will take place. Tell everyone that they must make homemade cookies, let them know how many cookies to make. You might also want to tell your guests to bring copies of the recipes for the cookies that they make. Along with the cookies, your guests can swap their recipes. Get some tins or plastic containers for the guests to put cookies to take home. Now, you are on your way to having a delicious event that will be talked about for years.

Until next time,

BENEFITS OF EYEBROW THREADING

When I don't want to look like Wolverine, I go to the local threading salon and have the East Indian women work it out on my eyebrows and upper lip. Since holiday party season is here, I must look sharp! I have my eyebrows threaded about once a month. The results are great. Here are some eyebrown beauty tips as per our Girlfriends at Dazzling Diva:

You've seen Eyebrow Threading Salons popping up in cities everywhere, well it is one of the best methods to shape eyebrows and to remove fine facial hair. You may be uneasy your first visit but it pays to fit this into your schedule every three weeks (varies diva to diva). Pay attention and read a few reasons why:

1. Eyebrow Threading is very precise and specialists have more control compared to other methods such as waxing, which results in a better brow shape.

2. Irritations and skin rashes are minimal with Eyebrow Threading because the top layer of the skin surface is not stripped off in the process.

3. More sanitary! Have you ever realized that when getting Eyebrows waxed most establishments use the same wax for all customers. New thread is used for each threading application.

4. Last but not least - Inexpensive when compared to other methods.

DESIGNER SOCIALITE

Here is the official wrap up of the celebratory party for Socialite/Fashion Designer Esther Nash:

The Quest for "it" held their first official covergirl party on Thursday, November 29th. Designer & Socialite Esther Nash {pictured left} played hostess to an intitmate crowd of well over 100 people at Gramercy Park's Room Service. Ms. Nash expertly decorated the venue with a photo exhibit featuring an assortment of photographers who all took shots of her during various moments in her career. Such photos included a shot of her most recent runway show in which Vogue Editor & Chief Anna Wintour attended. A video montage of television clips including a documentary of Esther start as a designer and her appearance on random dating shows - Single in the Hamptons. I though that was a bit odd, but cute.

Mannequins displayed Eshter's latest womenswear creations from the Babydoll line. Event Producer/Model Patrick Hazlewood {pictured right} of the B-1 Group donned an Esther Nash original tanktop. Mind you his pants were so low you could see the crack of his buttocks. I don’t think he was wearing underwear. Celebrity & Lifestyle Blogger Tia Walker {pictured right} and publisher of The Quest for "it" wore a black tank dress, also designed by Ms. Nash.

Notable attendees included Sandra O. & Melody W. from Ikon Models, Celebrity Makeup Artist Jerry Lopez, FIT Professor Karen Rippy, Model Brandon Mills, Photographer Hai Zhang (whose photo was used for the Feature Story Cover), Bettina Lee of Tinalee Media & Events (me! haha) among others. Guests enjoyed the Lychee "it" a Lychee martini made with the refreshing spirit Ty Ku and Lychee puree, as well as the Natural a drink containing Ty Ku and club soda.

The event's success was recognized by massive amounts of press that at one point outweighed the evening's attendees, working press included: Jason Winslow (Splash News), Rob Klein (photographer), Cognac Wellerlane (Cognac's Corner & Long Island Exchange), Jeffrey Clark Grossman (Totally Cool), Christopher Butt (Freelance Photographer), David Jr. (internet personality), Yui-Kit Chu (Freelance Photographer), Juno Chi, Terry Maloney (Freelance Journalist).

Pumpkin Pie and Cranberry Sauce, oh my!

Thanksgiving is just around the corner (next week to be exact), girl is your fork ready for you to get your grub on?

The thought of cooking can be overwhelming this time of year. It is easy to opt for making the same ‘ole thing you make during the holidays…year after year.

Well, I have two scrumptious recipes that are a sure hit for any Thanksgiving feast. One recipe is for a low-fat pumpkin pie. No one will know it is low-fat, cause it is packed with flavor. The other recipe is for a cranberry sauce that is out of this world. The sauce has port and shallots in it, so it is rich and bold.

Work your magic in the kitchen girlfriend!

Low-fat Pumpkin Pie

2/3 cup sugar
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon nutmeg, ground
1 pinch cloves, ground
1 ½ cups canned pumpkin
1 ½ cups evaporated skim milk
3 egg whites, slightly beaten
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
½ cup orange juice
9 inches graham cracker crust

Preheat oven to 450F. In a large bowl, combine sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, and pumpkin and stir well. Add vanilla, evaporated milk, and egg whites. Beat with an electric mixer until smooth. Fold in orange juice. Pour into unbaked pie shell bake for 10 minutes. Reduce heat to 325F and bake for 45 minutes. Take out of the oven and cool. Serve alone or with fresh low fat/non fat whipped cream.

Cranberry Sauce w/ Port and Roasted Shallots

18 large shallots, peeled, quartered lengthwise through root end
1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil
5 teaspoons minced fresh thyme
5 tablespoons balsamic vinegar
1 2/3 cups ruby Port
1/3 cup (packed) golden brown sugar
1 12-ounce bag cranberries
1/4 cup dried currants

Preheat oven to 400°F. Toss shallots with oil and 3 teaspoons thyme on small rimmed baking sheet. Sprinkle with salt and pepper. Bake until golden, about 25 minutes. Mix 1 tablespoon vinegar and 1 tablespoon sugar in small bowl. Drizzle over shallots; toss to coat. Continue roasting until shallots caramelize, stirring occasionally, about 10 minutes. Remove from oven.
Bring Port, brown sugar, and 4 tablespoons vinegar to boil in heavy large saucepan over medium-high heat, stirring until sugar dissolves. Add cranberries and currants; cook until berries pop, stirring occasionally, about 8 minutes. Mix in 2 teaspoons thyme. Mix in shallots. Transfer to bowl. Cover and chill overnight. Serve cold or at room temperature.

BE GORGEOUS WHEREVER YOU ARE

Genevieve Santos is the Founder and Executive Director of Gorgeous on the Go, a mobile beauty and skincare company. She has been a makeup artist and skincare consultant for three years. Now, while this is a short time in the beauty industry, Genevieve’s success is firmly backed by her strong business savvy skill set. At the tender age of 22, this Girlfriend already has six years of entrepreneurial experience, non-profit development, and graphic design under her belt. At the age of 18, Genevieve started her first business—a line of custom designed photo albums. It proved to be very successful.

In this new entrepreneurial vein with Gorgeous on the Go, Genevieve has worked with quite a few clients such as: fashion house Harriet’s Alter Ego, CoverGirl Queen Collection, and the Harlem Bridal Expo. Understanding that makeup artists need to showcase their talent and generate work, Gorgeous on the Go takes pride in providing them such opportunities and experience by hiring them on consulting a basis. Wrap Up on DuBois Chicago Event

Chicagoen Girlfriend Modupe Arowolo provided the pictures and information for this post. I couldn’t attend, so she was my eyes and ears for the event. ~Bettina

Here is her first hand account:

The party began at 5:30pm at Ariel Capital Management, the investment firm operated by
Mellody Hobson who was also the hostess of the event. There were about 40-50 people in attendance (about 95% of those were women), with people constantly coming and going as the event went on.

While keeping my eyes peeled for Amy [DuBois Barnett], I mingled my way around the room and had the opportunity to meet women from various industries, backgrounds and cities. I was so amazed at how friendly everyone was. Rhonda Saffold, the woman who organized the event talked with me for a few min and I was surprised to learn that she was actually Amy's sister-in-law.

Soon after my chat with Rhonda, I spotted Amy. She wore a red party dress that was elegantly complimented by her sleek, black bob and black suede shoes. She was very warm approachable. She signed my book, gave me hug and she actually talked with me for a few minutes about career, Chicago, etc.

Soon after Mellody made her rounds, as she too, greeted every person who wanted to mingle with her. It soon became time for Amy to speak about the book and soon after she gave her account on the experiences that led to the inception of Get Yours!, Amy and Rhonda presented Mellody with an original painting that once hung in The Keny Gallery in Cleveland, Ohio. A gallery founded by Rhonda's father.

At the end of the event, Amy officially began to sign books at table located in the lobby. Although the line was about 30-deep, she was cordial enough to chat with everyone.

Martha Stewart Collection

Hey girlfriends,

Yolanda Shoshana best known as, “Shoshi”, is on the now on the blog!

Here is a little 411 on me:

I am a lifestyle entrepreneur and artist known as the Luscious Lifestyle Diva and Queen of Kosher Soul Cuisine. My goal is to empower women to live luscious lives and celebrate living a life by design! I accomplish these goals through lifestyle, food/entertaining, art, and wellness. I am the founder Center of Female Empowerment, LLC, a lifestyle company in New York City.

I look forward to sharing advice/tips on home and entertaining with all of you!

By accident, I saw the new collection of houseware by Martha Stewart that is exclusively at Macy’s. In case you have missed the new commercials for the collection, one of them features Martha and Usher, which was a great way to bring to appeal to the urban market and the Connecticut housewives at the same time. Usher even calls Martha “girl” in the commercial and it didn’t seem to bother her….maybe Martha isn’t as stiff as she seems.

As for the Martha Stewart Collection, I found the colors for the sheets and bedding to be quite boring. Most of sheets and bread spreads are on sale, which might mean they are not flying off the shelves. The best thing about the collection is the cookware. Love or hate Martha, that woman knows how to make some fabulous cookware and bakeware! If you are strapped for cash don’t forget you can still get the lifestyle diva’s cookware at Kmart (probably for half the price)

WHEN IS BLACKFACE OKAY?

Or is it even Blackface at all? Is it just an artistic expression of beauty? We recently came across these two pictures. One is an ad (or so people have been saying) for American Apparel using Nars makeup on the model. The other is Kate Moss on the cover of The (red) Indedpendent. I think she looks pretty. Minus the crazy pink lips, the other picture really stands out.

I don't know what exactly either picture is supposed to portray. Why did they feel the need to put the models in black face? There is a link to the Independent's article. Perhaps that may help their reasoning.

When I emailed American Apparel to complain, this was their response...

Bettina,

The photo in question is actually not an American Apparel ad. It was a picture included in a layout in the British fashion magazine i-D. We had absolutely nothing to do with the production of this image, this is not one of our models, and we shoot our own advertising campaigns in-house. We opened up our blog when this magazine came out last August to a discussion of the image here:
http://www.americanapparel.net/presscenter/dailyupdate/dailyUp.asp?d=30&t=760
It was a controversial picture, including amongst us here at the factory, and got us all talking, which was undoubtedly what the magazine and the photographer
intended. I can't really say what he meant though, I've never met the fellow. I would suggest contacting i-D for clarification if you so desire. Thanks for letting us know how you feel.
Thanks,
Spencer Windes
Web Team Assistant

Hmm, interesting. You be the judge. So does this mean that Blackface is popular abroad? This is an American based blog. If someone other there knows, please pass along the knowledge.

WHO DOESN'T LOVE A GOOD HANDBAG?

I know I do. We first met Zulema last year at one of the overrated Shecky's event (yeah, I said it). She stood out. Her spunk and badass handbags had women clamoring over themselves as if they were at a Barney's basement sale. I knew she was something special. Below is her bio. Read on Girl, read on...

Zulema N. George, the creative designer behind Anavaa Kisasa LLC was born in Kingstown, St. Vincent. Anavaa Kisasa, a fashion accessory line specializing in women's handbags, was founded in 2004 when this Brooklyn native became tired of purchasing handbags that she knew he could create herself. "Adding my sense of style to an array of the finest leathers, I started creating funky, versatile bags that any woman would love. My handbags are custom made and personally handcrafted. I use leathers in a variety of colors adding a touch of personality to each handbag with a special detail." She replied when asked about her line.

Zulema always had a flair for fashion and knew what looked good, but she didn’t become interested in being a designer until 1995 when she returned to New York after attending Howard University to take a job in the fashion/retail industry. This sparked her interest in clothing and accessory design. Though her collegiate degrees are in the sciences, Zulema's true passion is design. Her current studies, at the renowned Fashion Institute of Technology, in New York City, has only heightened her interests and fueled her creativity and desire to share her vision with the world. She has a unique eye for fashion and a knack for making everything that she touches beautiful.

We heard it was coming...

and finally it's here. Sean John is bringing out it's women's line. It's about time. I know they had a few things here and there, but it wasn't much to write home about. I wonder if he meant for it to coincide with Brooklyn Fashion Week(end).

Umm, Alcohol and Breast Milk?

No one here at Tinalee Media & Events has a baby as of yet, but we realize that some of you do. I know that when I have a baby, I will breastfeed for sure. You know, I'm not sure how I came across this, but this is something Britney Spears and perhaps a few other young Moms should know about. Milkscreen. Founded by Mommies Julie Jumonville and Elizabeth Smith, Milkscreen is like a breathlizer for your boobs. And ladies, they say the 'pump and dump' method doesn't work. Here is what they say about the system:

Congratulations on your new baby and your decision to breastfeed!
Mothers around the world agree; breastfeeding is one of the most rewarding, fulfilling experiences of motherhood. But it is also full of challenges and mystery. Milkscreen aims to eliminate one mystery for nursing mothers by providing peace of mind that the milk baby drinks is alcohol free.

Why test your breast milk for alcohol? Alcohol in your breast milk can have a number of negative impacts on you and your baby:

  • Let-down and milk production: Studies show that alcohol can inhibit your let-down and milk production (one study showed a 23% decrease in milk volume with one drink1).
  • Calorie consumption by the infant: Your baby may also drink less milk if your milk contains alcohol, limiting the number of the extremely valuable calories he or she may receive.
  • Sleep: Studies also show that babies do fall asleep sooner after ingesting alcohol in breast milk, but they sleep less soundly and wake earlier.
  • Development of motor-skills: In more extreme cases, an infant's motor skill development may be hampered.

For all of these reasons, alcohol-free milk is safer for your baby, and with Milkscreen, it is easy to find out exactly when to breastfeed and when to use an alternate solution.

What does a positive result mean?
A positive result with Milkscreen indicates alcohol exists in the milk and you may want to seek an alternate source of food for your baby. With a positive test result, options include waiting for an hour or so and then re-testing your milk, using formula, or using stored, pre-pumped milk.

Note: Pumping your milk (the "pump and dump" method) does NOT eliminate alcohol from your breast milk. The only way to eliminate alcohol from your bloodstream is to wait a period of time.

Because every mom metabolizes alcohol differently, it is important to test your milk before feeding your baby if there is any question of the lingering presence of alcohol.

Ode to the Fashion of the Past..

With all the publicity for the Hip Hop Honors this week, I’ve been watching a lot of documentaries and videos of music from the past. I’m loving the fashion of the 80’s: the staple Kangol hat, Adidas, dookie ropes, and the sweat suit. And this was rocked by the women too! The beauty of it was that we didn’t focus on how tight the jeans were, or how short the skirts were. It was all about the music!! Remember MC Lyte circa 1988? She could rap any dude under the table and still didn’t have to look too provocative doing it. Or how about Queen Latifah, 1989, when she came on the scene with Ladies First? Now while I’m reminiscing about the nostalgia of the 80’s, let me be clear, I’d rather not see the 1985 version of LL without his shirt (I would, however, get a thrill out of somebody having the guts to walk down the street with a boom box on their shoulder). We all know that fads come back around eventually.. Can we say Crimps? Mohawks? I’m just wondering what’s next.. As long as it’s not Jeri Curls and Thriller jackets. I don’t think I’ll be able to take it.. Either way, I can’t wait to watch more videos this weekend saluting the pioneers of Hip Hop and trendsetters of the 80’s! Aah the memories..

Russell Simmons’ Surprise Birthday Bash

Everyone who knows me (personally) knows that I LOVE BIRTHDAYS! So when my girlfriend, Darra Boyd (Like Dat – Charm School, Flava of Love) convinced me to go out with her Sunday and I found out we were headed to Russell’s birthday… I knew I would have a blast. Of course I took client Amos Winbush {pictured left with Kimora} along. He had a blast as well. Apparently, Kimora planned the elaborate party as a surprise. His 50 & Fabulous party. And it was. It was held at Gustavino’s on 59th street. They were formerly a restaurant, but are now only open to parties of 100 persons and more. Dinner started the evening, but we attended the after-party, which was held in the same space.

The décor was Buddha chic. Gongs, Buddha statues, red candles, red silk couches, chiffon covered gazebos, and false trees which gave an autumn feel. The venue had an overall sexy maroon hue while soft music and several flatscreen montage picture displays of Russell and family greeted guests. It was a great tribute.

Once dinner was over, everyone came downstairs and the party began. DJ Kid Capri was on the wheels of steel. He started spinning classics and today’s popular music, “I got my drink and my 2-step…” and then Kimora greeted everyone. She then stated how this was a surprise birthday party and brought out the biggest surprise, Ms. Patti Labelle{sorry for the dark picture, but that is her above singing "Somewhere Over the Rainbow"}, to sing happy birthday. Ms. Labelle tore it up! A massive pink and gold cake was cut and passed around. I didn’t try it, but it looked good. I don’t like massive thick pink frosting, but I bet the spongy cake part was good. Shortly thereafter the performances began. Musiq Soulchild was up first. I swear I see/hear him all the time when I’m out and about. He didn’t have anything new to sing and the crowd was clearly bored. He kept hollering at us to see if we were still there. Uh, yeah, but sing some new ish! He sang about 3-4 songs. Then Kid Capri got back up there and made us groove again. Now, I saw Ladies Love Cool James in the house, but didn’t know he would perform. He rocked the house! LL Cool J is hard as hell! Battle anybody I don’t care if you tell. He excels, they all fail. Now let him continue to ROCK THE BELLS! Ahhh and he did. The lips were scrumptious. He kept drinking from a bottle of champagne and then pouring it out for the homies. When LL performed ‘Jingling Baby,’ he brought Ms. Labelle (with the promise that he wouldn’t do anything kinky. Remember the last time she brought a man on stage and he started freaking her. She had to put him in his place and tell him who she was. Lol), Kimora and some random chick on the stage. I tried to convince Darra to go up there, but she didn’t.

We had a good time. We were whisked into VIP and I was chilling with Michaela angela DavisHoney and Essence magazine (who invited me to Black Girls Rock! this Saturday so I need to pull my pennies together for that $300 ticket. She doesn’t even get comped and she’s a board member) Kimora, family and friends.

Guests we spotted:
Djimon Hounsou
– Kimora’s boyfriend (still don’t understand how that works, but it works for them so I’m not one to complain)
Gabrielle Union
Zab Judah

Andre Royo (The Wire)
Idris Elba (Tyler Perry movies and The Wire)
Doug E. Fresh
BJ Coleman – Of course
Kevin Liles
Andre Harrell
Gayle King

And a gambit of high-powered songwriters and music execs

Good times were had by all.
