Book, Party, and Notes

Hello Girlfriends Get-Together community:

We told you about it in the August 28th post, but now it is here. Girlfriend Amy DuBois Barnett 's book, Get Yours! The Girlfriends' Guide to Having Everything You Ever Dreamed of and More launched yesterday. Amy is a wonderful client, friend and mentor. We are extremely proud of her accomplishments and wish her much success on this new venture. For a more personal look into Amy's quest or to sign-up for her book tour, visit
www.AmyDuBoisBarnett.com. You can also "Add her as a friend" on MySpace at www.MySpace.com/AmyDuBoisBarnett

Okay, so tonight is her book launch party. It's being hosted by Gayle King, Kevin Liles and Angela Burt-Murray. We've been working on the guestlist for weeks now. We invited just over 600 guests, the capacity of the space is 200, but the RSVP list has soared to over 800. Where did all these random people come from? Hot mess. An email will be sent to all the party crashers to deter them from doing so, but you know how people can be. Special invited GGTers will be on hand to partake in the festivites.

Tomorrow we'll recap the party and post pictures.

Until next time...

Healthy Ovaries Bulletin

A girlfriend forwarded this to us, so as you know, we must share. It is taken from Vital Juice Daily

----

In honor of Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month, we turned to Dr. Lynda Roman, Chief of Gynecological Oncology at USC, to help us make some noise about the "silent killer."

Misconception: A pap smear is not a test for ovarian cancer. It detects cervical cancer.

Symptom watch: While there's no early detection test (a CA125 blood test isn't reliable), watch for unusually sustained occurrences of bloating, pelvic or abdominal pain, difficulty eating or feeling full quickly and urinary symptoms (urgency or frequency).

Doctor's advice: Have an annual vaginal/rectal pelvic exam and discuss regular monitoring with your doctor. If experiencing symptoms, consider seeing a gynecologist (not just a gastroenterologist) and add an ultra-sound to your pelvic exam.

Risk reduction: Oral contraception, pregnancy and breast-feeding have been shown to reduce the risk of ovarian cancer.

For more information or to support the cause, check out the Lynn Cohen Foundation or the Ovarian Cancer Research Fund.

Share these tips with friends and family -- you may be a lifesaver!

Until next time....

Is everyone preggers?

Recently, two of my Girlfriends had baby boys. I just helped decorate a baby shower this past Saturday, two of my Sorors are due any day now (the poor chicas are trying to walk/waddle the babies out) and today I learn that a guy a used to date is having a baby boy in January (not thrilled by that, but such is life). What is going on in the world? I mean it's great and all, but everyone seems to be pregnant. :-) Yours truly is holding out. I'm not even close to being engaged, plus, I need a rock first.

It is such a joyous occassion. I just love pregnant women. Especially when they maintain their sexy. I know when I day comes, I will try my best to do the same. An example of such is Christina Aguilera. I was pleased to learn that she and hubby are expecting their first. She looks so cute pregnant. To parphrase my girlfriend Aarian, "There is no reason to let yourself go. I looked fly before I was pregnant and I will stay looking fly while pregnant. Get your hair done or something." And believe me, she is fly as ever.

Christina is keeping it lovely with long necklaces, big hoop earring, a cute tee, simple jersey skirt and ballet flats. She is also staying paperazzi ready with her dark glasses and sweater to help hide the bump. Note the handbag.
Aww, ladies... Until next time...

..And now it's gone..

Bon Jour Mon Amis! (For those who took Spanish) Good Day Friends!
So fashion week has finally wrapped up, and unfortunately I didn’t have the sense to take any Airborne because your resident fashionista, moi, is very much under the weather. As a result, I cancelled several gigs but this is what I can tell you:
I’m officially a huuuge fan of Rosa Cha! The designer, Amir Slama just makes you wanna wake up, shower, and wear your bathing suit to work! Well, not really.. Guess you had to be there to see the clothing up close and personal. Let me just say you wouldn’t dare go near the water in these digs. This was a very high end show with lots of Victoria’s Secret models. Talk about the beautiful people, geez, I felt 3 ½ feet tall..

So over at Baby Phat, my sources tell me that the collection was “sub-par. A lot of jeans, bogus bling, spandexy dresses, jewelry, etc. etc.” Maybe next year Kimora..

The show that I was looking most forward to was Snoopy in Fashion. This show featured a who’s who of designers with a Peanuts inspired theme. Some of the big names were Betsy Johnson, Isaac Mizrahi, Heatherette, and Laura Bennet of Project Runway fame. Guess who strutted down the catwalk? Our favorite ANTM winners Jaslene Gonzalez and CariDee English! Work it! This show was special because Peanuts fans and fellow fashionistas had the opportunity to bid on the designers’ creations on eBay to benefit Dress for Success. Didn’t get to see the show? Want to support a worthy cause? Can’t afford to buy the designers’ clothes on eBay (that would be me)? You can make a fashion statement and still support Dress for success by purchasing this cute scarf (see above) for $68 at the MetLife store online. You can shop for yourself and still help the cause! Does it get any better?!

Well Dahlings, my robitussin is kicking in so I’m gonna say au revoir (this French translator is really working!)..

Until next time..

BLee's FASHION WEEK WRAP-UP

So long tents. New York City has been buzzing about with the Mercedes Benz 2008 Spring Fashion Week. Even though Bryant Park decided to keep the shows for a few more years, the aire was not the same. Quite a few designers decided not to show in the tents but rather photo studios, their personal showrooms, or other office locations. This year, I kept it simple and worked a minuscule 5 shows: Carlos Campos, Rock & Republic, Nautica, Baby Phat and Custo Barcelona. {Pictured left: Omahyra and Bettina}

Carlos Campos’ line was classy straight cut suits for men. The secret closer was Omahrya. She is famous for her boyish looks, wild personality and numerous tattoos. I was assigned to dress her. She was a doll, but she kept dragging me to the bar for drinks. I told her she shouldn’t drink (get trashy) before the show, but she was so nervous (which was surprising because she does this sort of thing all the time)
she wanted something to calm her nerves. Omahyra wore a fitted shimmery black tuxedo styled pant suit with pencil legs. As an added bonus, she wore a gorgeous diamond choker, valued at 200k. An armed bodyguard followed us everywhere to make sure no one took the necklace. He even followed her to the stairs when she ripped the runway. That was a fun show. {Pictured right: Carlos Campos, Omahyra and the jewelry designer}

Rock & Repulic. I prepped this one. My call time was 1pm with a show start time of 4pm. The collection didn’t arrive until 2:30 almost 3pm. That gave me an inkling as to the organization of the show. The production staff kept telling their higher-ups that the clothes were on their way and that everything was running smooth. Suuuure. The collection was pretty. The women’s line included lots of chiffon bedazzled in bling (in a good way), short-shorts and jumpsuit minis, long flowy gowns. The used a lot of rich blues, oranges… not a lot of patterns. The men’s line had heavy cotton jackets and pants. Light leather jackets. It was fairly bland.

Nautica. I prepped this one as well. The collection, nautical of course with lots of naked men. Well, not naked, but they wore surfer shorts, boxers with robes, white linen pants w/o shirts. There were a few shirts and 3 piece ensembles thrown in there, but I mostly remember a lot of looks that had 1-piece of clothing. Didn’t see the show, but I bet it was sexy. Interestingly enough, the clothes were dirty, as if they had pulled them from out of storage. Some smelled laundered. That was a disappointing find, but after I thought about it, it didn’t really surprise me. Designers recycling looks and collections all the time and simply say “This is the new blah-say-blah for Summer/Spring/Winter/Fall”.

Baby Phat. I dressed this one. Hot mess. The models wore tini-weenie bikinis. One dark-skinned model wore a chocolate bikini and therefore looked naked. As with Kimora’s style, random bling was all over the place. She had mini-jumpsuits as well, but the fabric was off. Turquoise, white, patterns… I was not impressed and frankly disappointed. The line looked more like the juniors section at Sears rather than a Fashion Week premiere.

Custo Barcelona. I prepped and dressed. This show was classic. If you know Custo’s style, then you know his over the top designs. Embroidered pants, skirts and jackets. He used a lot of plastic in the shirts and pants. Interesting choice of material and a tad bit hot for spring. I accidentally erased all photos taken, but the collection looked better on.

Until next time...

It's Here!!

So fashion week officially launched on Wednesday, September 5th and it started off quite interesting. I had the opportunity to see lots of beautiful designs and had to keep myself from drooling over the pieces shown at Alexandre Herchovitch. The theme there seemed to be tuxedo chic. Very cute!! I hear the L.A.M.B. show was the place to be that night. I heart Gwen Steffani!! Her style is amazing!! Her pieces featured the label JustSweet, which is sexy clothing and status denim. (Lots of sexy fabrics and colors, too!) She's also launching her signature fragrance as well. Another trend I saw was a smoky eye with red lips. If you can pull this off its definitely a good look. (Personally, I'm still perfecting mascara application and my one attempt at a smoky eye made me look like a racoon straight out of a fist fight. But I digress..) Tonight's line-up features Baby Phat and Snoopy In Fashion. I'll be sure to report back..

Some other trends that will be out this fall are high waisted anything! Pants and skirts.. Yes, they've officially made a come back. Now don't try to dig into your old stash of clothes and pull out those "Mom jeans", the cut will certainly prove different. Also, heeled booties are all the rave. What's so fab about these is that you can wear them with skirts and pants! I have my eye on a pair of Steve Madden booties that are beyond cute! Metallics and wide legs have also made their appearances on the runways and low rise pants are now a thing of the past. Who knew?!
Until next time..
