National Singles Week

Did you know that there is actually a full week dedicated to being single? You may be surprised to find out there is a singles week .Oh yes, National Singles Week run September 21st, 2008 through September 27th, 2008!

National Singles Week was started in Ohio back in 1984 to appreciate the growing ranks of unmarried Americans, who are now 92 million strong and growing! What are you doing this week?

The time has come to celebrate singlehood! There is nothing wrong with you because you are single, so why not celebrate? These days two out of every three single people have never wed.

Three easy and breezy things you can do to rock being single:

Get a Singelringen. - A Singelringen (means single ring in Swedish) is basically a ring for single people. According to Singleringen: “there are engagement rings and wedding rings, but there was no such thing as a ring for single men and women. If anyone needs to signal one’s civil status, it’s a Single”. I love my Singelringen, it’s stylish and goes with everything. I also like to boast and brag about it cause it symbolizes being single and proud ( did I mention it's also wore by alot of celebrities).

Make a date with your single friends. - Go out with your single girlfriends and toast to being single. Share funny stories and the glories of singlehood. If you can not get your single friends together, find a singles event to check out. Attend with your head high in the know that single people are 92 million strong,

Be adventurous- Simply make a deal with yourself to try new things this week to celebrate your independence! Go to a new restaurant, attend an event you would never go to in a million years, go on a flirting spree, your opportunities are endless. You have a whole week to play with.

Above all else rock being single! It is a luscious status to be in!

Your J-Spot!

Since I promote luscious living to women, I am always asked what make a luscious life. The answer to that that question can vary, but one main ingredient to luscious living is finding your j-spot…your "joy spot". I coined the term j-spot cause it sounds like the term g-spot. You should pay just as much attention to your j-spot as you do your g-spot and watch as your world fills with laughter and light!

Your j-spot is that place in your soul that tingles whenever you feel joy. Do you know where j-spot is? If it has been awhile since you have tapped into your j-spot, I challenge you to tap back into it. There are some of you may not even know where your j-Spot is anymore, I encourage you to find it.

You are entitled to feel joy. When you came into this world, you were destined to have and be your best. Stop just going through the motions during the day. Do at least one thing a day that brings you joy. Come on, I dare you. It can be something small like taking a walk, getting the grande at Starbucks instead of the tall or go big and book that dream vacation you have always wanted to take. Girl go for yours and may your jspot overflow!

Good Lookin'

I am big on promoting luscious living, but looking luscious does not
mean you have empty your bank account. Just like Tyra Banks, I don't believe
in spending alot of money on clothes. Any woman on a tight budget can look
like she spent big bucks on her wardrobe as long as she knows where to
shop. A few ideas get your wardrobe together:

Sale Racks- Hit the sale racks of your favorite stores first then work your
way around to the rest of the store. You just might find what you are
looking for on the sale racks. Better yet, that great shirt you had your
eye on may now be half off.

“Bang for Your Buck” Stores- Think Target, Payless, Steve and Barry’s, etc. Have you noticed that big time designers are getting the hint and putting out affordable clothing lines? Even celebrities like Venus William and Sarah Jessica Parker are getting it, which is why Steve and Barry’s is so popular. Have you checked out the clothes at Target lately or browsed in Payless. These stores have stepped up their game and other stores are following suit.

Clothing Swaps- Talk about the newest rage! Clothing swaps have become popular all over the country. Not only is good for your bank account, it’s also good for the environment. You can put together a swap for you and your friends. All you have to do is pick a date and time, tell your friends to gather their gently worn clothes that they no longer want, bring them to the swap and get then everyone gets to swapping’. You now have clothes that are new to you. Donate any left over items to the organization of your choice.

One more thing to remember: just because something is on sale does not mean you have to get it. This is how bad clothes happen to good people. Flip though magazines to get ideas on how to put together outfits, that way you can create fabulous different looks.

Until next time,

WHAT’S OUR SKIN’S REAL AGE?

In preparation for Girlfriend's Beauty Bag this Saturday, the fab ladies over at Gorgeous on the Go prepared a skin quiz.

Enjoy!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This simple quiz will determine if we’re really treating our skin right!
Your Skin Age is the biological age of your skin, based on how well you care for it. Determining your skin age is simple! Just take out a piece of paper and answer these 10 questions below. If your answer is “yes,” add or subtract as recommended:
Start off with your chronological age (based on the year you were born…duh!)
Sun Exposure Do you…
· Wear SPF daily? Subtract 2
· Use a tanning bed/booth? Add 17
· Spend more than eight hours/week outdoors during the day? Add 8
Skin care products Do you…
· Use daily skin care products (i.e., Cleanser, Toner, Moisturizer)? Subtract 2
· Use age-defying treatment products? Subtract 5
Nutritional supplements Do you…
· Use a mega multi-vitamin? Subtract 4
· Or, use a one-a-day supplement? Subtract 3
· Take additional antioxidants (e.g., vitamin C, vitamin E, etc.)? Subtract 1
Lifestyle Do you…
· Experience high stress? Add 3
· Sleep 7–8 hours per night? Subtract 3
· Exercise a minimum of 60 minutes weekly? Subtract 2
· Live in a metropolitan area (pollution)? Add 2
· Consume four or more alcoholic beverages per week? Add 3
· Smoke? Add 8
· Or, are regularly exposed to secondhand smoke? Add 7
· Consume eight or more glasses of water daily? Subtract 2
Voila! The final number is your REAL Skin Age! If you want to find out how to take steps to take better care of your skin, drop by the Gorgeous on the Go table for a quick skin analysis and regimen consultation. Our beauty advisors will be on hand to provide their expertise at the Girlfriends Beauty Bag event on June 28th.
Summer Lovin'
Oh yes, the summer is upon us. Many of my single girlfriends have declared they are taking time off to find Mr. Right and opting to have a summer fling. I say, you go girl, to any single gal who wants to have a good ‘ole time this summer. To pull off a successful summer fling there are a few things to keep in mind as you tap into your inner Aphrodite (the goddess of love and beauty).
Find suitable fling material – Sounds so simple, because anyone is fair game. Sometimes it is not as easy as it sounds. Don’t take the first guy who comes along. Be out and about as much as possible. Great locations to look for a potential fling partner are the beach, happening cafés or lounges with roof tops. Remember to be completely upfront with the other person. Let them know you are not looking for anything serious at this time. It’s not okay to lie about your intentions.
Play it safe! - Always make sure you play safe. Carry your own protection if necessary. Sometimes people use the excuse that they get caught up in the moment and don’t worry about protection. Every choice has a consequence. So, girl if there is no glove, make sure there is no love!
It is what it is - Go with the flow and stay in the present. Don’t let things get to serious, after all a fling is about keeping things causal and fun. Know you limits when it comes to emotional and physical intimacy. If you are the type that gets “all pink”, end things sooner rather than later. The longer you wait the more complicated it will be.
Last but not least….have fun!
Until next time,
Shoshi
Workshop Series for The Arts Industry
As you know, we are BIG on mentoring (getting advice as well as giving it). So when our Girlfriend Thysha Shabazz of Shabazz Communications
Leading Media, Arts & Entertainment InsidersLaunch Professional Development Workshop Series
Arts and Activism Company Announce Career Building Series
New York City - - AKILA WORKSONGS, Inc., in partnership with CJAM Consulting, will launch a series of media, arts, and entertainment professional development workshops designed to inform and empower budding entrepreneurs, employees-in-transition, and current professionals in the arts industry. Local and nationally respected experts from the public relations and marketing fields, as well as the business, legal, and arts management fields will share their tips of the trade over the course of five workshops this year. The first workshop in the series is "Media and Public Relations for the Arts" and will take place Wednesday, May 28, 2008 at MoCADA (Museum of Contemporary African Diasporan Arts, Inc.) from 6 - 9 pm (the first hour includes on-site registration and a light reception). MoCADA, a co-sponsor of the series, is located at 80 Hanson Place, downtown Brooklyn, NY. Other workshops on arts industry topics will take place in July, September, and November 2008. Pre-registration is $45 (scholarships are available) and on-site registration is $50. For directions, please visit www.mocada.org. For general information, please contact AKILA WORKSONGS at 718.756.8501 or frontdesk@akilaworksongs.com. To register, please go to www.ticketannex.com or call 866.388.4TIX (4849).
Last year, AKILA WORKSONGS Founder and President, April R. Silver, envisioned professional gatherings that would both serve as a part of its 15th Anniversary Signature Events, as well as provide a platform for her distinguished clients and colleagues to share their expertise to up-and-coming arts leaders.
"Over the past 15 years the company has been inundated with requests for information on how to get started in PR or consulting or in the performance arts business”, Silver recalls. All independents, be they artists or entrepreneurs, want to know what they can do to get to the next level. I felt it was time to gather the professionals in my circle, create a space for real live, face-to-face human interaction with top-notch experts, and do it in a way that rivals cold, convention-like settings.
The workshops will cater to participants in a way that is not possible via the Internet or at mass conferences. Registration fees, for example, reflect a sensitivity and commitment to arts lovers, independents, and new entrepreneurs. In order to reach as wide an audience as possible, the presenters will sponsor a number of scholarships to individuals who need only request financial support. The deadline to request a scholarship for the first workshop is May 21 (see contact above) -
Blee's bad for passing the info along a bit late, but get your grind on and see if they are still available.
Besides shaping the series (see descriptions below), Silver also identified a management company to help present and produce the workshops.For a few years now, Candace Jackson and I have been hearing about each other work from mutual friends and clients, says Silver. When we finally connected, I was blown away by her knowledge of arts management and her keen professionalism. Her guidance on this project makes all the difference and thrilled that CJAM Consulting is partnered with us.
Girlfriends!
It never fails if I am watching television or if I am out at an event, there is a woman ripping another woman apart with words. Where does all this catfight come from? This is not any easy question to answer nor is there probably one answer.
One of the things that I love about the Girl Friends Get Together events is how fabulous the women are! The women are genuine in the fact that they come out to be inspired, motivated, and to connect with other women.
There are simple things that you can incorporate into your daily routine that support another woman. Here are a few…
1) Don't hate the player, hate the game. Women tend to get very competitive in looks, love, and career. Stop the "catfight". Focusing on your goal will get you further, than focusing hostility on another woman who you deem as competition. Maybe just maybe, it is the situation that you are angry with and not the person.
2) Give at least 3 women words of encouragement each day. By doing this you will make someone's day. Paying it forward has a high value of return.
3) Refer women in your network to each other. When someone calls you for a referral, start with the names of women in your network. When you refer fabulous women to each other, you also come out shining! Build the "old girls network!" A great way to start is coming to a Girl Friend Get Together event.
4) Keep it real. Stop the gossip and the back stabbing. Also, do not burn bridges. One of the best quotes I have heard is "do not step on someone else's toes; you never know if they will be connected to the ass you have to kiss tomorrow". Be real by any means necessary, even if you do not agree.
Until next time…
~Shoshi
Now You Might Not Agree With This. .
. .but I’m gonna say it anyway: Sean Bell, Barack Obama, and Rev. Jeremiah Wright are nothing new to us. We've seen them before. In my opinion, these three men are simply a 21st Century reflection back of the Martins, Malcolms and Medgars of yesteryear. And yet, they represent the progress that we as African-Americans have made. They are here to remind us of where we’ve been and where we’re going. Allow me to explain myself. . .
The Victim:
One was a civil rights activist; the other a high school baseball star, making the transition into family life. The lives of Medgar Evers and Sean Bell parallel only in death; and yet through the profound violence of their deaths, a community was united. In memorium of Mr. Evers, a college was established in his name; one can only wonder if and how respects will be given to Mr. Bell. And while, it took thirty years for Medgar’s murder to be vindicated, one can only hope that this time, we won’t have to wait that long this time around.
The Savior:
He has taken the lead, folks; and despite Clinton’s landslide win the West Virginia last nite, Barack Obama remains the front-leader in the Democratic race to the White House. For all those people who said we couldn’t do it, there is a Barack Obama supporter shouting YES WE CAN. And just as Martin had done for our parents, Barack gives our generation hope and makes us believe in the journey to the promised land.
The Outspoken Pariah:
Even in the midst of their fiery words, the truth rings loud and clear: Injustice will not be taken lightly. I read the Autobiography of Malcolm X when I was thirteen; I’ve both watched and read the remarks of Reverend Jeremiah Wright (the whole thing, not the media-edited versions). Dare I say, that this is a dangerous parallel to make, all things considered, but both rhetoric leave me with the same sense of enlightenment and vigor. Thankfully, we live in a day where Rev. Wright (and sometimes wrong- laugh with me here) can say what needs to be said, and he doesn’t have to fear for his life. As long as there are two sides to every coin, there will always be a Malcolm for every Martin. . . .
______________________________________________________
Two weeks ago I went to visit my father’s family in the Carribbean. A priority for me was to see my grandmother. At eighty-seven years old, she is as sharp as ever and while having only completed up to the sixth grade, she has raised among her children, two police sergeants and a doctor. As I sat in her living room admiring the photos of our kin on her walls, I began to think of how much the world has changed in her lifetime. She was born less than sixty years removed from the Emancipation Proclamation.. . .I pray that she will be here to see our next President.
I digress. We will continue to lose our brothers and fathers and uncles and husbands to senseless violence and incarceration. However, the Sean Bell's and Medgar Evars’ of the world will not have died in vain. Despite their tragic losses we can see signs that the change gon' come. Whether it is at the pace we would like is another story, but our impatience will give us the fire to keep striving forward.
I’m done. Speak on it. . .
GGT SPOTLIGHTS...
Yes, it has been a while. February actually... But we heart the concept of highlighting the accomplishments and shouting-out our girlfriends. 'Boo-hiss' on us. So here we go!
This time we’re featuring Sabrina Thompson, owner of BeanPye and a moving force behind Women in Entertainment Empowerment Network (WEEN).
We chatted it up with the Chica and here is what she had to say…
GGT: Are you living your dreams?
Hmmmm, to many people’s surprise I’m not quite there yet. I have a great business. I love my career and I’m where I’m suppose to be now; however, I have so many more aspirations that I would like to accomplish in my career regarding education, media, activism and the arts. Also on a personal note, I’d love to start a family sooner than later.
GGT: Are your career goals in line with your personal goals?
Most definitely. I couldn’t separate the two. My life must have boundless energy, social service and laughter. My company, educational career, nonprofit ventures personal life all include a mixture of those elements and I don’t see it changing anytime soon….why should it have to?
GGT: Has there been an event or person that has greatly influenced you to be the person you are today?
PEOPLE--Aside from God, My parents and brother are the driving forces in my life that supply me with infinite encouragement and brutal honesty.
EVENT(S)—It’s more of a journey and not an event, but the fact that I competitively ran track from the age of 7-22 is major in my life. In that time span, I’ve had amazing successes and some dark, life altering moments…all of which molded my character, introduced me to great work ethic and made me a master at multi-tasking. This journey alone showed me that “SHE-WOMAN” lives in every woman!
GGT: Five years ago, did you envision yourself being where you are today? If not what's different?
Oh no! Five years ago I was 24 and I had no clue I’d be a high school teacher with a fun jewelry company and also co-running a nonprofit. I was in the world of TV not thinking about the 3 other careers that God graciously directedf me to be a part of. I am helping to change people’s lives on a micro and macro level and I’m simply a vessel doing God’s work. Most nights, I go to sleep and wake up every morning with genuine feeling of joy in my heart.
GGT: What advice can you give to other rising star girlfriends?
It’s real simple. Do what makes your heart smile, and the money will come later. There are plenty of folks on Wall Street ready to slit their wrist simply because they are in a field that “looks” good but it may not be what they are called by the Most High to do. Be still, listen to your heart and then immediately start your journey with no hesitation!
GGT: What are some key beauty tips you live by?
Oh boy, ya’ll are asking me, the former Tomboy of NC, about beauty tips? J I just started wearing mascara a year ago and I LOVE IT! If left up to me, I’d wear a ball cap, flip flops and low rise fatigues everyday! I make sure I keep my abs tight with nightly abs exercises. Also, I keep my hair long, healthy and shiny but using very little heat and NO products on it at all aside from shampoo/conditioner. I always wash my face with water only in an upward motion…gotta keep the lines away as long as possible! I exfoliate my lips by using a Vaseline and Dixie sugar mixture. It works WONDERS!
GGT: Name some good books you’ve read.
DaVinci Code
Angels & Demons
favorite books are “the Autobiography of Malcolm X” and “100 Years of Solitude”
KEEP YOUR COOCHIE TIGHT!
Now ladies, I’m sure we’ve all thought about the notion of having a loose coochie at some point in time. NO ONE ever wants that! Oh gosh, that would be terrible. Well, unless it’s almost time to push out Junior and by the looks of his big-headed daddy, you think you may need a dollop of Crisco to help get the job done.
Since I've always been athletic, I've never really thought about it being an issue. I mean, I’ve ran, danced etc. and always maintained a fairly tight physic. I must admit that in my paranoia, I would do kegels and extra situps sometimes to ‘maintain my youth’. But in reality... why? Can you believe that women get surgery to recreate a virgin like vagina? Chile, puh-leeease!!
Hey, as we are getting to be young ladies of a certain age, some of us are having children, and for health concerns, there are more reasons (other than keeping your man happy) to keep your coochie tight.
As per one of my fav sites, WebMD, here is a good article as to why one should do kegels and the benefits of doing so.
Enjoy!
Kegel exercises are one of the most effective ways of controlling urinary incontinence naturally.
Any woman who's had a baby has likely heard: remember your Kegels! The physician who invented these pelvic floor muscle exercises, Arnold Kegel, MD, first recommended them to his women patients who had just given birth and were leaking urine.
But Kegel exercises can help most women with urinary incontinence, regardless of cause or age. Kegel exercises aim to correct an underlying cause of urinary incontinence: the weakened pelvic floor muscles that can occur after childbirth or in overweight people. When the pelvic floor muscles are weak, urine can leak, especially if you have a form of urinary incontinence called stress incontinence. This is the type in which you leak urine when you laugh, cough, sneeze, or are engaged in physical activities such as jogging or sex. The value of improving urinary incontinence with Kegel exercises is now widely accepted.
Here's what you need to know:
Who can benefit from Kegel exercises? Anyone, at any age, who suffers urinary incontinence or leaks urine. While the exercise mainly helps those with stress urinary incontinence, it can also help those with another common type, urge incontinence, also called overactive bladder. With urge incontinence, you have a sudden urge to urinate and don't always make it to the bathroom. Men with urinary incontinence problems can do Kegel exercises, too.
How are Kegel exercises done? To exercise the pelvic floor muscle, pretend you are trying to stop the flow of urine. Pull in and squeeze those muscles. Hold the squeeze for about 10 seconds, then rest for 10 seconds. Try for three or four sets of 10 contractions every day.
How do Kegel exercises help? Kegel exercises strengthen the pelvic floor muscles, an underlying cause of urinary stress incontinence. When these muscles are weak, it can cause you to leak urine.
When should I expect to see results from my Kegels? Just as it takes time to build your biceps and strengthen any other muscles, it takes time to strengthen muscles in the pelvic floor. Give the Kegel exercises six or even 12 weeks to work. And remember you must keep doing them, and you should do them daily. When and where should I do Kegel exercises? The beauty of Kegels is that you can really do them just about anywhere, anytime. No one would know unless you tell them what you are doing. Try doing a few sets of Kegels when you are in your car, sitting at your desk, or watching TV. To be sure you are doing Kegels correctly, ask your doctor or the nurse to describe or demonstrate the proper form.
Do I need any equipment for Kegel exercises? Not for doing Kegels alone. But some doctors suggest you also use weighted cones as you do Kegel exercises. The idea is to insert these vaginal cones, available in various weights, and perform the Kegel exercises with the cones in place. You gradually increase the weight of the cone you insert. Sometimes, Kegel exercises are used in combination with biofeedback, a monitoring system that helps you gain control over bodily processes such as urinary control. And sometimes Kegels are done in combination with electrical stimulation, in which very brief doses stimulate muscles in the area. But you can choose to do Kegel exercises by themselves, with no equipment.
Are there any other benefits to Kegel exercises? Actually, yes. Kegel exercises aren't just good for improving urinary incontinence. the stronger your pelvic floor muscles, the more sexual pleasure you can expect. That was an accidental "side effect" discovered by Kegel. He heard back from his patients about these sexual benefits. The pelvic floor muscles contract more strongly during orgasm once they are strengthened.
PHEW, IS THAT VINEGAR?
As per the chicas at Natural Solutions, here are useful tips for the use of vinegar...
Make Mine Vinegarade
Good news for dieters—now there’s a simple drink that can make you eat less and control your sugar cravings. And chances are you have some in your cupboard already. A recent study from Lund University in Sweden shows that using more vinegar to season your food or even drinking vinegar mixed in water with a meal reduces the body’s insulin response during digestion, which is important for tempering sugar cravings and avoiding weight gain. The subjects of the study fasted overnight and ate white bread along with a glass of water containing varying amounts of vinegar. Those who drank the most vinegar (about 2 to 3 tablespoons) had glucose and insulin responses about 25 percent lower 90 minutes after the meal and felt more full than those who didn’t consume any vinegar with their meal. —Sarah Forbes Keough
Another good use for vinegar:
If you have heartburn, take a tablespoon (or about 1/2 a shot) of it and it will make your heartburn disappear. Who knew?! It burns like hell going down, but it feels like it's burning the heartburn away. Chile, it's true!
Sil Lai's book is a step-by-step way for readers to confront their pasts, assess their current situation, and move on to a successful future. Her process, coined as SEPIA ("Self Empowerment Principles in Action"), relies on transforming the "drama" from one's past into something tangible and useful.
NOT FAR OFF IN A DISTANT LAND...
Safe Horizon's 10 Signs that you may be experiencing relationship abuse. With a little ad-lib from Bettina.
Does your boy/girlfriend...
  1. Act jealous or possessive, like tell you who to hang out with or what to wear?
  2. Make threats to hurt you or someone you care about?
  3. Threaten to hurt him/herself if you want to end the relationship?
  4. Pressure you sexually, such as touch you or force you to have sex against your will? (Yes, you CAN be raped even if you are in a relationship with that person)
  5. Act physically aggressive towards you or not respect your personal space, like hold, pinch, grab, kick, shove you, or give you 'light' punches?
  6. Spread rumors about you, insult you in front of friends or do anything else that is meant to make you feel bad about yourself?
  7. Steal money from you, or intentionaly break something valuable of yours, like an iPod or jewelry?
  8. Follow you around, give you unwanted gifts, leave you threatening messages on your cell or email -- all of which are forms of stalking.
  9. Isolate you from people that you may usually count on for support, like friends or family?
  10. Say things like, "I only do it because I love you..." "If only you would do what I tell you..." or "You asked for it..." and other things that are blaming and manipulative? (Another key phrase is if they tell you "No one will love you the way I do..." or "I'm the only person for you...")
If this is happening, girl, you have options! Think about what you want from a relationship.
What you SHOULD DO
Ask yourself: “What do I want to get out of dating?” No one ever thinks “I want to be disrespected and hurt.” Try this instead, “In a relationship, I want trust, respect, honesty and affection.”
Trust your instincts: If something feels wrong in a relationship, it probably is. And if ti keeps feeling wrong, remember that it’s okay to break up with your partner at any time. There are plenty of other fish in the sea, and perhaps it’s just not your time. Everyone needs a little ‘me’ time every once in a while.
Talk to a trusted girlfriend. If something about your relationship make you feel angry, scared or confused, find a non-objective girlfriend to talk to who can help you sort things out. You don’t want someone who will encourage you to stay with your partner because of their status, money, material items OR someone who will just agree with everything you say, but not offer a solution. You need sound advice and a good strong ear.
Get help. Call 911 if you are in immediate danger. Keep a log at work of everything that goes on in your home. Call safety hotlines such at 1-800-621-HOPE.
What you better NOT DO
Blame yourself. The only person to blame for abuse is the one who is choosing to be abusive.
Fight fire with fire. Self-defense means protecting yourself in order to escape a dangerous situation – it’s not about trying to get revenge. Wanting to fight back is understandable if someone is hurting you, but this may only escalate the situation and do more harm that good.
Settle for someone that is violent or abusive. Television, movies and even friends and family say say that a relationship makes you ‘complete’. This ain’t so!! An abusive relationship can leave you completely scared, isolated, hurt, Eff up your children, or even worse, you could be dead! Choose being single and safe over an unhealthy relationship. And don’t stay for the sake of the children. That will not help to create a strong family nucleus in their eyes.
The bottom line is that we ALL deserve to be in loving, respectful and health relationship! No if’s, ands, or butts!! For more information and for other helpful tips, visit Safe Horizon online at www.safehorizon.org
RULE THE GODDESS WITHIN
Girlfriend Chanda Rule says she can remember singing “Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star” to her church audience at the age of two. At age six she was taking piano lessons. Growing up in the suburbs of Chicago and often being the only black student in her social activities caused Chanda to find solace in the church. She attended Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago and was a member of the Youth Choirs. Although she was showered with affirmations of “you should sing” and “you are talented,” Chanda professes she never wanted to sing professionally. “Singing was more of a fantasy for me because I came from a very academic family,” stated Chanda. After graduating Cum Laude from Howard University Chanda moved to New York City to pursue a career in Publishing. After two years in corporate America, Chanda found herself longing for more. One day while riding the train to work and burdened by the load of her unfulfilling job (Oh gosh, like we all do at some point in time. Some of you know how it can be!); Chanda heard a still and calm voice say to her “you should be singing.” About a year later, Chanda left her job and opportunities immediately began to present themselves. Chanda began singing background for vocalists in New York and was cast in renowned musical theatre productions of Hair in Europe and New Jersey’s Hudson Shakespeare Company.
Her voice began to take her through the jazz scene in New York and she performed as the lead vocalist with Victor Jones and sung along side internationally acclaimed musicians such as Mino Cinelu, Papo Vasquez and John Benitez.
She began opening for artists such as Regina Bell & The Whispers, India.Arie, Angela Bofill, and Amel Larrieux. She has also performed at various jazz and music festivals and clubs such as Birdland, Le-Club Moscow, Hard Rock Café, and the Jazz Standard.
After writing and producing her first CD LikeWater in 2005 she introduced her music to the airwaves with a live radio concert on New York's WBAI for International Women's Day.
Chanda independently released LikeWater, and her second album I Too Speak of a River through her production company LikeWaterMusicPublishing (BMI).
Over her 8-year career Chanda has traveled throughout the US and internationally in Amsterdam, Berlin, Germany and Russia. Speaking of her purpose as an artist Chanda says, "There is something about rhythm and melody that can always find a smile, throw a head back with laughter, or even cause tears…it transcends language and breaks through cultural and racial barriers.”
We caught up with the girlfriend for a GGT Spotlight, and here is what she had to say…
GGT: What makes a good girlfriend?
Chanda: Being accepting and as nonjudgmental as possible.Being a great listener, having a great sense of humor,having a rich spiritual life, and a willingness toshare herself and her life, goals, fears, and joyswith her friends
GGT: Are you a good friend to your girlfriends?
Chanda: I try my best to be
GGT: What inspires you?
Chanda: Music and personal stories about life and overcoming challenges
GGT: Name some books you've recently read
Chanda: Just finished Gloria Naylor's "Linden Hills" for a second time, in the middle of Superwomen & Goddesses by Akua Auset, and am also chilling out to Harry Potter III!
GGT: Do you have words of wisdom to impart on rising star girlfriends?
Chanda: Yes. Trust the goddess within.
GGT: What is your guilty pleasure
Chanda: Hmmmm... Day spas and movies with hot popcorn!
