Russell Simmons’ Surprise Birthday Bash

Everyone who knows me (personally) knows that I LOVE BIRTHDAYS! So when my girlfriend, Darra Boyd (Like Dat – Charm School, Flava of Love) convinced me to go out with her Sunday and I found out we were headed to Russell’s birthday… I knew I would have a blast. Of course I took client Amos Winbush {pictured left with Kimora} along. He had a blast as well. Apparently, Kimora planned the elaborate party as a surprise. His 50 & Fabulous party. And it was. It was held at Gustavino’s on 59th street. They were formerly a restaurant, but are now only open to parties of 100 persons and more. Dinner started the evening, but we attended the after-party, which was held in the same space.

The décor was Buddha chic. Gongs, Buddha statues, red candles, red silk couches, chiffon covered gazebos, and false trees which gave an autumn feel. The venue had an overall sexy maroon hue while soft music and several flatscreen montage picture displays of Russell and family greeted guests. It was a great tribute.

Once dinner was over, everyone came downstairs and the party began. DJ Kid Capri was on the wheels of steel. He started spinning classics and today’s popular music, “I got my drink and my 2-step…” and then Kimora greeted everyone. She then stated how this was a surprise birthday party and brought out the biggest surprise, Ms. Patti Labelle{sorry for the dark picture, but that is her above singing "Somewhere Over the Rainbow"}, to sing happy birthday. Ms. Labelle tore it up! A massive pink and gold cake was cut and passed around. I didn’t try it, but it looked good. I don’t like massive thick pink frosting, but I bet the spongy cake part was good. Shortly thereafter the performances began. Musiq Soulchild was up first. I swear I see/hear him all the time when I’m out and about. He didn’t have anything new to sing and the crowd was clearly bored. He kept hollering at us to see if we were still there. Uh, yeah, but sing some new ish! He sang about 3-4 songs. Then Kid Capri got back up there and made us groove again. Now, I saw Ladies Love Cool James in the house, but didn’t know he would perform. He rocked the house! LL Cool J is hard as hell! Battle anybody I don’t care if you tell. He excels, they all fail. Now let him continue to ROCK THE BELLS! Ahhh and he did. The lips were scrumptious. He kept drinking from a bottle of champagne and then pouring it out for the homies. When LL performed ‘Jingling Baby,’ he brought Ms. Labelle (with the promise that he wouldn’t do anything kinky. Remember the last time she brought a man on stage and he started freaking her. She had to put him in his place and tell him who she was. Lol), Kimora and some random chick on the stage. I tried to convince Darra to go up there, but she didn’t.

We had a good time. We were whisked into VIP and I was chilling with Michaela angela Davis – Honey and Essence magazine (who invited me to Black Girls Rock! this Saturday so I need to pull my pennies together for that $300 ticket. She doesn’t even get comped and she’s a board member) Kimora, family and friends.

COMMON'S ALBUM RELEASE PARTY

So Common's album, Finding Forever, dropped on Tuesday and it is awesome! Just as good as the last one, Be. We heard a few tracks before the actual release so we've been anticipating it.

Last night was the release party in New York. It was held at the sometimes stank (doorman was trippin on folks) Marquee. I had the pleasure of rolling with my dentist (she is also Common's and orthodonist to the stars) Dr. Catrise Austin of VIP Smiles and Dr. Erika Faust (worked on perfecting his straight smile (using discretion as to exactly what method she used) and she also an orthodonist to the stars).

It was hot as hades outside but once we got in we sauntered over to VIP and claimed our spot. Common came in about about an hour after we arrived. OH!! He looked good. Makes you just want to exhale, but slow and deep. Like a tall glass of ice cold lemonade on a hot ass summer day. He doesn’t know it, but he is my babies’ daddy in my mind. Catrise went over to say hello and then let the mob descend upon him. It was an understandable mess. Didn’t get a chance to peep his shoes, but he had on a hat (as usual) a white printed tee and a vest. From the way he was bobing and weaving, he had been blowing through the trees.

Anywhoo, all seemed to have a great time. The music was decent at first and then it picked up later in the night. Q-Tip was on the wheels of steel and he was holding it down. But as usual, the crowd was industry so people didn’t really dance. I didn’t let that hold me back, I boogied on down. Ahhh, Girlfriends… enjoy life and dance whenever you can.

This video is hard to come by. But, we got it via Media Take Out. Girlfriend hit the deck... face first. We hope she didn't get hurt. But, DAMN! I know I have a hard time walking down the stairs in heels, but that is usually after a few drinks.

Last night was the Smirnoff: In The Mix party at Arena in New York. Ed Lover hosted it;

Pete Rock was spinning, DJ 9th Wonder was spinning, Buck Shot Shorty - Black Moon (Duckdown Ent./Boot Camp Clik). OH! OH! It was sick. I mean, if you are a true hip-hop lover, you missed it. "Do dat, do dat, do-do dat-dat-dat" "T.R.O.Y." and on and on. I was a little apprehensive about going. I didn’t know what to expect and forgot what the party was even about (as did most others). The drinks were lovely. I sipped on the Red Apple all night. It was delish!! Even Ed Lover had to shout it out all while his eyes were glassy and cheeks rosy as if he were Santa.

We met two people from Pittsburgh, PA. SHOUT OUT TO ‘DA BURGH! GO STEELERS. That was fun. Every time the hors d’ eouvres came by, we pounced… even though they screamed frozen food section. Ew. But hey, something had to soak up the free liquor.

Now, we aren’t getting paid for this, but look out for a Smirnoff party near you. If not for the drinks, then definitely for the music!

Look Who's on the Scene...

Last night we attend the Sol Village music showcase hosted by songster Eric Roberson at Sounds of Brazil (SOBs) in New York. We just wanted to check out the local talent and see what’s good. Well, there was good, bad and ugly as to be expected. At one point I found myself imitating Eddie Griffin's Sexual Chocolate because some acts were just good-n-terrible. Pleasantly enough, the lovely Deemi was brought to the stage. Now we first heard about her through Khalid Salaam (writer extraordinaire). He had to review her album and gave it a decent thumb up. Deemi reminds us of an old-skhool, light-skinned, Mary J. Blige. Really just based off the looks. The girl can sing so we were please. Another act that caught our attention was Marcell & The Truth from Baltimore. Marcell is a big man, but girl he could move. He said he was a preacher for the past 7 years but realized that that was not his calling…. Interesting. But whatever, he could saang. (Look at him, doesn't he look like a preacher. He wore jeans on the bottom.) He had one backup singer and she killed it. Big up to all the backup singers out there. It is very important for you to hold it down. People really are paying attention so don’t look a hot mess!

The show was short and sweet 7:30-10:30pm –geez, I guess it wasn’t so short. Afterwards people passed out flyers and whatnot for their artists and future shows. To our surprise, Jean Baylor (Zhané) is back on the scene. Maybe we’re under a rock, but who knew? Her new album is Testimony: My Life Story. Everyone’s got a story to tell, don’t they? We did a little research and found an interview. Check it out if you have time. It is a long one.

Music and a Movie

This week has been a whirlwind of activity. While trying to prepare for next weeks’ Jamaica 360 trip with Recycling Inspiration and The Terrie Williams Agency (see the March post) Tinalee Media & Events (TME) had to take care of a few things. Here is a recap:

Tuesday, May 8
Took client Amos Winbush (see April posting re: Amos Winbush Showcase) and guest Trey Lorenz around town. Amos is a very talented vocalist, Kobalt Music Publishing signed songwriter and younger cousin of R&B singer/producer/songwriter Angela Winbush. We took him to Disturbing Tha Peace’s Bobby Valentino “Special Occasion” release party. We got there early to avoid craziness and were soon smothered with people. After the major photo opps were handled I left early to avoid the shenanigans and let Amos and Trey Lorenz (I’ll Be There duet with Mariah Carey on her Charmbracelet tour) party and B.S. with the peoples.

Wednesday, May 9
TME screening the Focus Features film Talk to Me starring Don Cheadle and Chiwetel Ejiofor. Supporting actors include: Cedric the Entertainer, Taraji P. Henson, Mike Epps, Vondie Curtis Hall and Martin Sheen. In the movie, Don Cheadle portrays the real-life Ralph Waldo “Petey” Greene Jr. an ex-con DJ who talks his way into becoming a radio personality on the white-owned WOL-AM and ends up being a hometown hero for the black community because of his “tell it like it is” approach to life. It is set in the mid-to-late 1960’s in Washington, D.C. At one point in the film touched on the D.C. race riots after Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. died. The footage was moving.



The cursing was a bit much, but I got over it. Taraji's character could have been developed a bit more. She played Vernell Watson, Petey’s irrepressible tempestuous girlfriend. Chile, she caught Petey in the bed, mid-pump, with another woman and didn’t kill him. That is strength. I tell you.
While it did have strong black righteousness overtones, it is really a movie about a man, a miscreant, and a DJ. Go see it in July when it is released. I bet the soundtrack is hot: Sam Cook, James Brown, and other soulsters.

Despues, we took Amos to the Amy Weinhouse “Fade to Black” Gold Celebration. Boring. It was packed, but we just weren’t feeling it. Maybe it was the crowd, perhaps the music. Amy did come, but we didn’t see her. As per Wendy Williams (Girlfriend in my mind) Amy literally stumbled in at the end of the party, (high off of something) stayed for 4 minutes and then left. Who knows, we didn’t see her, but Tia Walker, The Quest for “it” confirmed her appearance. We did see Keenyah Hill, America’s Next Top Model Cycle 4. She was with her Ikon Model Management agent and looked lovely as ever… and skinny! Work it, Girl.

Thursday, May 9
Kevin Powell’s (activist, Real World cast member – he got into an altercation with Tammie) Birthday party. It was the same time as the showcase. L Couldn’t attend, but we sent our love.

TVT Records had a soul music showcase with Keke Wyatt and Teedra Moses. Okay, so it said 7-11pm. We figured it would start somewhere around 8:30ish. NO. It started at 10ish. Fine, it started. Keke was up first. She looked great – grew out her hair, lost some weight, skin looked nice- and sounded even better. The chile sang 2 ½ songs. None were new. Hmm, a bit confusing since it was supposed to be a SHOWCASE! At any rate, Teedra rocked the house with a live band while screaming at the music controllers to fix her ‘protools’. I had to dodge in and out to see if Trey Lorenz was caught up at the door. Everyone had a goodtime. They did not have an open bar, but the way people were throwing them back, you sho-nuff couldn’t tell. Fat girls dancing sideways and parting the Red Sea, industry cats pushing past as if they forgot the manners their Momma taught them, and singer/songwriter ‘networking’ (aka. hustling) to make sure you know who they are and that they are the next big thing… Good times, good times.

Hello World!

Welcome one and all to the world of GGT! This is geared towards Ladies. Please feel free to share, discuss, network, and most of all have fun.

Let me start of by telling you of my adventure with my homegirl (in my mind) Kelis. I went to her concert the other night at New York's Sounds Of Brazil (SOB's) and boy-oh-boy, I didn't know what to expect. I mean, what kind of crowd does she pull? Punkers? Hoodrats? The Eclectic folks? I've never been to one of her concerts before so I was excited. Plus, my friend says that Bossy is my theme song.

First off, the DJ arrive the same time I did (which was 8ish) and no one was there to warm up the crowd. My only entertainment was the group of gay guys in front of us telling this story and that... "Girl don't you know... Umm, hmm well I heard... What? Shut up!" I just knew my boy Tabari was going to get 'accidentally' felt up by the end of the night. You know how guys just happen to brush up against you and pretend as if neither of you felt anything.

After standing on the concrete floor in a jam packed space for almost two hours; my feet were hurting. Unfortunately, I had to be cute and wear my 4-inch pirate inspired Steve Madden Cognac colored knee-high boots. The DJ got on stage and tried to 'warm up' the crowd, but after hours of waiting, we were like 'Negro Plueaze.' While talented, he just couldn't get me going. That was until I heard, "I wanna rock right now. I'm Rob Base and I came to get down..." You know the rest. I had to take it back and do the wop in the 1x1 square foot space that was allotted me.

When the band finally got on stage, they came complete with their Hennessy bottle, snifter glasses, and a swagger. I shouldn't have been surprised, BUT I WAS. Scheduled for 9pm, Mrs. Jones didn't step on the stage until 9:55pm. My crew and I were 'ret-to-go.' However, once she began her set, we couldn't Keep It Down because she had us feeling like Millionaires. I was hoping she would do Millionaire because it's one of my favorites from her last album. She opened the night with it so I was pleased. Kelis entertained us with her gyrating hip thrusts, spastic robotic pauses to the beat and flailing arms. She was a sweaty wild woman. During my theme song, I felt inspired to do her 'broken chicken' dance. Don't worry, I didn't. Blindfold Me was the highlight of the evening. When Nas came on stage, the crowd got hype and the girls started squealing like pigs. Some of the guys were too. Even I had to pull out my camera. He was cute in his little NY Yankees baseball cap, white button down, jeans and blazer. Traditional 'dress-up gear' for rappers of his age. I couldn't quite see his shoes though. I didn't realize Kelis was that much taller than he. Well, only an inch or two, but she could have been wearing heels.

All in all, she did a good job. I haven't bought her new album Kelis was Here, but now, I think I might have to pick it up. The show could have been a bit longer AND she could have arrived on time, but she looked great. We've all seen her new haircut, but she has now shaved the right side of her head and swooped the rest to the left. Think of a mohawk with only one side being shaved. Donning a black bolero jacket, black sequined mini-dress with silver piping around the neck, silver leggings, she rocked the house. Again, from my vantage point, I couldn't get a full understanding of the shoes, but I saw black boots with some sort of furry top. I love shoes, so those were the first things I was trying to check out.
